A House of Many Lives: The Maple Street Mansion Through Time:
The Maple Street Mansion, a vibrant landmark in Carrollton, Georgia, has captivated residents and visitors alike since its construction in 1890. Built by L.C. Mandeville, a prominent figure in the local textile industry, the mansion holds a unique place in the city’s history. Mandeville erected the grand Victorian home next to his family’s residence to appease his wife, Mary Ann Stewart Mandeville, who longed for her native Vermont. In a gesture of love, he imported maple trees and lined the street with them, giving Maple Street its name.
This architectural gem, spanning approximately 33,000 square feet, has served many purposes over the years. The mansion boasts three distinct areas, housing a restaurant, event center, and a recently added 10,000 square foot retail space. Inside the main house, visitors are treated to a unique dining experience within a beautifully preserved Victorian setting, complete with a train car bar.
The mansion’s history is as rich and varied as its architecture. In the 1960s, it was divided into boutiques and student housing, even earning the nickname “Hippie Joint” from a former owner, Bob Uglum. Uglum and his partners later transformed the first floor into a thriving restaurant, marking the beginning of the mansion’s long association with the culinary world.
In 1984, the Uglum family purchased the property, ushering in a period of expansion and prosperity. Under their ownership, the mansion became a beloved restaurant and entertainment venue, boasting the largest seating capacity between Birmingham and Atlanta. Its menu, featuring Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, drew crowds from miles around. For nearly forty years, the mansion served as a gathering place for college students and locals, offering delicious food, live music, and a lively atmosphere.
Despite its popularity, the mansion has seen a succession of short-lived tenants in recent years. A Korean soul food restaurant, a chicken wing establishment, and a family-style eatery all attempted to make their mark, but none could sustain long-term success.
Now, the Maple Street Mansion is embarking on a new chapter, embracing its role as a showcase for local artisans and creators. The Heirloom Store, a curated marketplace for handcrafted, vintage, and antique goods, will soon occupy the space, offering a unique shopping experience that celebrates creativity and craftsmanship. This exciting venture promises to further enhance the mansion’s appeal, attracting both residents and tourists eager to discover the treasures within its walls.
The Maple Street Mansion stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Carrollton. Saved from demolition in 2014 thanks to the dedication of local residents, it continues to thrive as a testament to love, family, and community. From its origins as a symbol of a husband’s devotion to its current incarnation as a hub for local artistry, the mansion has woven itself into the fabric of the city. As long as its stories are shared and cherished, the Maple Street Mansion will continue to enchant generations to come.
